4/17/20 - Update from pastor dave

Good morning GBC family,

If you’re like me, you have mixed feelings about this time of separation.

Though I’m still at the office most days, I have been enjoying the extra time with my family. One of my daily highlights is our lunches together, followed by a time of Bible reading, discussion, and prayer. We’ve also had extra time watching movies, or throwing a ball around in the yard, or just sitting around and talking (or wrestling!) together. These have been good times, and I’m confident we’ll look back on them fondly.

On the other hand, it really is a disorienting time. There are days when I’m anxious, fearful, frustrated, and the like. There are days when I really just want to go do something, and I’m mad that I’m stuck at home. This very week we were supposed to be on a family vacation to Washington DC, but that’s been cancelled with everything else. And then, of course, there is the difficult reality of the loss of life… no longer far away, but coming closer and closer to home. It’s hard.

But I take so much comfort in the fact that God is still God, no matter what. Psalm 56 says:

“This I know, that God is for me. In God, whose word I praise, in the LORD, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid.”

“This I know, that God is for me.” That’s a remarkable and reassuring statement, isn’t it? No matter what happens today or next week or month or year, God is for us. And in Him we trust. I hope you are finding peace and joy and hope in Him today, no matter the circumstances.

One of the things that is helpful to me through all of this is looking forward to our times of worship on Sunday mornings. Though we’re not all in the same room, we can see by the numbers on YouTube and Facebook that we’re all still there! We’re singing about His goodness, we’re reflecting on His Word, we’re praying and asking for His gracious help and provision, and we’re glorifying Him together. I know it’s not the same as being together, but I sure hope you’re enjoying these times together as much as I am. Please plan to join us again this Sunday at 10:30am at our website or on Facebook.

On top of our weekly online service, we’d like to make other fellowship and prayer times available to you. It’s a poor substitute for being in the same room, but the computer program Zoom has been a big help in filling the gap. We are using it for staff and Elder meetings, student & young adult ministry, and more.

So what we’d like to do is offer you an opportunity to connect and pray with other believers via Zoom. Pastor Matt has already set up a brief fellowship time for Sunday mornings (see our FB page for info) but we’d like to establish some other times for connection as well. If you’d like, we will set you up with an online fellowship group with whom you can meet regularly. We are thinking about scheduling these groups for Wednesday evenings and Sunday evenings.

But here’s the catch: you have to let us know if you’re interested! You can email me at demmons@gbcnewfane.com and let me know that you want in, and we’ll sort out the details and get back to you. When you email me, please tell me 3 things: Which night you prefer (Wed. or Sun.), whether or not you prefer a mixed group (men and women) or a gender-specific group, and how I can best contact you.

We’re also looking to establish a few online Bible study options… keep your eyes out for more details on that too.

And one last thing…if you’re intimidated by Zoom, don’t be! If you have a computer or tablet and internet, it’s relatively easy to set up, and we can help by walking you through it over the phone.

OK, I think that’s it for now. I trust you are all doing well. Please be in touch with us if you need anything, and we’ll look forward to “seeing” you Sunday morning!

Serving you because of Him,

Pastor Dave
